Player Handbook

Introduction

Welcome to membership in the Kern County Junior Golf Association for this, our thirty-first year. Thanks to the tireless and dedicated efforts of Founders Bob and Marlene Crozier, one of the finest youth organizations was created. The members of the Board, staff volunteers, and myself, are forever grateful.

Take time to read this entirely. There are several requirements you will need to complete before playing in the KCJGA tournaments. There are also a lot of changes this year, so make your self familiar with all this new information. No entry forms will be required this season. You are automatically entered into all ten (10) events unless you cancel. There will be a few different ways to cancel.

Since you are entered in all the tournaments, it is your responsibility to notify the board by email at kcjga@yahoo.com if you will be unable to play. Doing so before tee-times are posted is critical in keeping tee times flowing on the day of the event. If at the last minute you can’t play, you MUST email KCJGA BEFORE your tee time by sending a withdrawal email to kcjga@yahoo.com. There is a link on the website at www.kcjga.com also. If you no show an event you will not be allowed to play in the following tournament.

The board of directors and staff of the KCJGA look forward to seeing you on the golf course this summer having a good time, meeting new friends, and being part of this wonderful program. Your questions, comments, or suggestions are important to us, so we can continue to make this program better for one and all.

Membership

Membership in the KCJGA is open to all junior golfers, age 17 and under as of August 30, 2012, who meet the Class B scoring standards and have the approval of a course professional or golf coach. It is limited to residents of Kern County. An application for new members is available at www.kcjga.com. Dues for the KCJGA include entry fees for all tournaments for which the member is eligible.

Age Group Classifications

A player’s age group will be determined by his or her age as of August 30, 2012. A player may at his or her discretion, move to a higher age group or level, but not a lower one.

*The board reserves the right to change scoring standards based on course and weather conditions.

Starting Times

Starting tee times will be posted on our website, www.kcjga.com, 2-3 days before each tournament. It is important that each golfer arrive at the course at least 30 minutes prior to their start time. Tee times are often adjusted based on cancellations during the week. So, by not being at the event 30 minutes early could cause you to miss your tee time. If you miss your tee time, you will not be reassigned to another group. You will not play in the event.

Scorekeepers

Scorekeepers are required for girls and boys ages 13 and under. Each golfer is required to provide a scorekeeper for a minimum of 5 events. Scorekeepers will be notified by email of the events they are responsible for. It is important that email communication is returned to ensure your commitment. If you fail to show up to score keep, your child risks being DQ’d if we are unable to find your replacement.

Rules

1.                  The KCJGA abides by the USGA golf rules. Become acquainted with these as well as the local rules. Local rules are printed on the back of each golf course score cards. We will give you a simplified rules of golf book if you need it.

2.                  You must replace all divots in the fairway, repair any ball marks on the green, and rake the sand traps.

3.                  Enter your score on the next tee, not on the green.

4.                  KCJGA members are limited to residents of Kern County.

5.                  Spectators and parents are not allowed to accompany any player on the course during tournament play. If a spectator is caught on the course, his or her golfer will be disqualified. Exceptions are score keepers and marshals who must not, however, accompany their own golfer. Special permission may be given for play-offs or other special events.

6.                  Discard all trash in proper containers.

7.                  Please notify a board member or tournament chairman if you are unable to play. A no show will be disqualified from the next tournament. Repeated violations will result in stiffer penalties.

8.                  Check in at the scorer’s table at least 30 minutes before your posted tee time.

9.                  All participants must carry, push or pull their own clubs.

10.              Tie Rule: First place ties in ages 14 and over “A Class” will be decided by a sudden death playoff. All other ties will be decided by matching scorecards, beginning on the hole which play started.

Conduct and Etiquette

Your conduct on and off the golf courses will be watched by other golfers, golf professionals, and members of the community. You have a responsibility to the game of golf to obey the rules and etiquette on the golf course and toward fellow golfers.

You have been invited to play on some of the finest golf courses in Kern County. Show your appreciation by playing in a manner befitting the game of golf. Repair all divots, pick up trash and leave the course better than when you came. You must also abide by all local rules required by each course.

Aside from infractions of the USGA and local rules, penalties, loss of day points and possible disqualifications can result from the following.

1.                  Unsportsmanlike conduct, including cheating.

2.                  Throwing of clubs.

3.                  Swearing or obscene language.

4.                  Not turning in or signing the score card.

5.                  No-show or consistent late arrival.

Dress Code**

A neat and clean appearance appropriate to the game of golf is required. Boys: Shirts with collars and sleeves must be tucked in at the waist. No jeans, denim, athletic shorts, extreme baggy pants or baggy shorts will be allowed. No hats turned backwards. Girls: Your shirts must either be collared or sleeved. They must be long enough to cover your mid drift when you swing the golf club. Your shorts must be long enough for your fingertips to touch material when your arms are naturally relaxed at your sides. No warnings will be given. If you show up to an event out of dress code, you will not be able to play. If during the event a dress code violation is caught, you will be immediately removed from the course and disqualified from the event. Multiple violations will result in disqualification from the tour.

**Dress code also applies to score keepers, marshals, and other volunteers during tournament play at all golf courses.

Entries into each event

Every golfer who submits a completed registration form with payment will be entered automatically into all tournaments. If you are unable to play in a tournament you must cancel. You may cancel by sending an email to www.kcjga.com, or filling out the cancellation sheet at the scorers table. This must be done at the tournament one week prior to the event you will be missing.

Participation Guidelines

Scoring Standard

Players must maintain scores at or below the Class B scoring standards in order to continue tournament play in this program. Players under the age of nine (9) will be admitted only by the expressed written recommendation of a PGA professional.

Members who fail to maintain a score at or below the qualifying scores after three (3) events will be excluded from further tournament play.

A player who fails to maintain a scoring average at or below the scoring standard in Class A will be moved to Class B.

A player, at his or her own discretion, may move to a higher age group, but not a lower one. (This is generally not recommended)

No-Shows and Late Arrivals

If you are unable to play at one of the events, you must email at www.kcjga.com, in advance of that tournament. Failure to do this will exclude you from play in the next tournament. A second violation would mean a longer suspension. Any player who misses his or her starting time will be disqualified from the event. Emails must be received by KCJGA before 8pm the night before an event to insure they are withdrawn and not a no show. If a player gets ill over night you must email us at kcjga@yahoo.com before your tee time passes.

Scholarships

Depending on the availability of funds, a limited number of scholarships may be awarded to qualified college-bound senior members. If you are interested in applying, contact one of the Board members who will assist or provide you with the information you need.

Awards and Prizes

Awards are given for 1st -3rd place in each category. You must be present at the time of the awards presentation to receive it. If you leave before the presentation, your award will be forfeited. Awards could be adjusted based on the size of the field.

Points are awarded for each age category at each tournament, beginning with 15 for first place, 12 for second place, and 10 for third and so on down to 1 point for playing. In order to receive more than 1 point you must shoot at or below the scoring standard. At the end of the season, special awards are given to the top five points winners (and ties) in each age category. These could be adjusted based on the size of the field.  It is also possible to qualify for the championship tournament by finishing high in point totals, even if you haven’t qualified otherwise by winning an A class trophy or medal at one of the regular tournaments.

Crozier Classic Championship

At the end of the season a championship tournament will be held at Kern River Golf Course. Invitations will be distributed to let those golfers know who qualified for this event. All golfers who receive an award and compete in a minimum of 5 KCJGA events will be eligible. It will be held on the Sunday prior to school starting. Tee times will start around 11am and finish around 1pm. All golfers will play from the first tee regardless of the number of holes you will play. Spectators will be allowed at this event. We ask that all spectators remain in the rough even with the golfers. Do not lag behind the group or you risk being hit by the golfers behind you. Golf carts can be purchased for the golf shop but a limited number are available.

At the Championship Tournament, a perpetual trophy is awarded to the winner in each age category. Also, special perpetual trophies are awarded to the outstanding Male and Female golfers of the year. Point totals play a large part in deciding this winner, but participation, sportsmanship, and conduct are also taken into consideration.

Loren Roberts Cup Qualifications

Each year the Loren Roberts Cup is held and KCJGA sends a group of elite golfers to participate. In order to be eligible to be chosen for this team, you must have competed in at least 3 events prior to the date the team is chosen. The team which will consist of 8 golfers will be chosen during the middle of July. The team will include 2 golfers age 16 and 17, two golfers age 14 and 15, 2 golfers age 12 and 13, and two girls any age. The team selection is made by the board and is based on participation, sportsmanship, and leadership. The board will also consider points, tournament placing and scoring averages. If you are chosen and unable to play, the board will find a replacement.
